It has come up a few times when people ask about the best way to do screencapping and there are many fields of thought, but this is how I do it. Mine is slightly different as I do capping by face rather than just capping an entire episode/movie and sorting from there.

Why? Because I HATE SORTING AND IT TAKES FOREVER. Doing it by face means I can skip around more and only focus on one person at a time. It also means I can easily rewind a scene to make sure I got exactly the expression or moment I wanted. This is a walkthrough for only how I personally screencap. I can't tell you how another person does it! Apologies for the rambling, I never know what's useful to people.

1. We don't talk about where we get things (drink up me mateys yo ho). I normally get things that are 720p because I don't have endless space on mediafire, but 1080 is nicer quality, it's just more hefty. I would say people who are capping and iconning for themselves should go for 1080, but if you're capping for other people like I am, 720 will save you space.

2. I use Video Media Player/VLC to do this. It is awesome and I love it. I use 4k Downloader to get YouTube specific stuff.

3. For organizational purposes, I have a Caps folder on my computer. I then organize based on media and then face. Like this!

4. So my friend Lauren/capping on IJ made this neat hotkey explanation for when you're using VLC. You have to make sure to place the caps into the organized folder every time. If you start to sort before you finish, it will simply fill in the spaces, so wait until you're done, that's the best way. You should close out VLC and reopen it when you change faces due to the sequential aspect. You don't have to, I just do it for my own organizational insanity.

5. After you're done, you sort through what you've taken. I then open up the files usually 500 at a time until I finish. I look through and pull out caps or other people or faces that are blurred/look bad. Sometimes if I have like 30 caps of the exact same expression, I'll cut it down to 15 so it'll be less sizable of a zip for myself. Once I'm finished I zip it and load up to mediafire.

6. I put caps into folders around 500ish at a time, for zip size reasons, and I put them in folders depending on scenes. So if I have a folder 1 and folder 2, I'll make sure a scene with its lighting is done in folder 1 before going on to folder 2. This way people can be done iconning a scene. Or at least I try, I do my best. Sometimes lighting just sucks y'all.

7. I purposely keep my folders under half a gig each because I had been requested to by iconners a long while back so they can download one folder at a time and decide if they wanted to get all of them. I've just done it out of habit now!

8. As everyone knows I sort my posts by actor, canon, and sometimes character over here on DW. It is different on IJ as I also sort by gender, race, and hair and eye colors as people do more original characters / characters with no pb so they like to sort by visual identifiers. I have a spreadsheet here listing all my finished things and I have a visual representation on my tumblr.
